I just got my hands on a new baitcast reel from my favourite baitcast reels manufacturer, Abu Garcia.

Abu 6500 C3 CT Mag Hi Speed

Specifications (From the box):

Gear ratio: 6.3:1
Line capacity: 14/245 (lbs test/yds) or 0.40/200 (mm/M)
Magtrax Brake System
Carbon Matrix Drag System
3 Stainless Steel Bearing

——————————–

Specifications (from my view):

- Good ol’ variable magnetic brake (from it’s predecessor, Mag Elite)
- Ratchet (line out alarm) -> something new for a mag-ed reel. (Finally!)
- 6 spoke centrifugral brakes system, uses plastic (compared to 2, from Mag Elite)

——————————–

I have yet to test run this new product. The ratchet is definitely handy for my fishing needs, so that I know that the line runs out when a fish takes my bait.

Reel Review (by me!)

It seems that everyone’s looking for a review for this reel? Ok since I’m not a professional reviewer or anything, I’ll review it under my own perspective.

The new handle is definitely handy, and cool. But it’s a little heavier than the old plastic one, and it’s not as balanced (in weight) as the plastic one. But it’s not a problem if you asked me, it’s just heavier that’s all.

It uses 6 brake blocks (compared to 2 from the original Mag Elite) and it’s definitely not handy when it comes to casting. It definitely helps reduce spool over-runs if you’re a novice, but you’ll definitely want to remove it if you’re doing tournament casting with this.

Other than that, it’s high speed gear ratio 6.3:1 means you retrieve more in lesser time. Torque is definitely compromised because you’ll have lesser cranking power compared to lower speed gear ratio. In my opinion, it’s not a great reel for offshore usage.
