ask yusry’s girlfriend anything. Hehehehe

March 11, 2008 at 3:51 pm (Announcements!, General, iPod Touch)

When my boyfriend (whose name is Yusri btw) started writing about Ipod Touch, I laughed at him because I think it’s so useless and obsolete. All he did is just comment about the product and write directions already written by IT geeks but in terms even a 13 year old can understand. I even think he is crazy for answering inquiries for free.

At first we were excited when traffic picked up from the usual less than 10 per day. We had readers as far away as Canada, USA, Israel, Middle East, etc! He did not list his blog in any traffic website but it became popular anyway and was even featured on the front page of WordPress.

Then I brought up the idea of turning traffic into money. But he was really against it saying no readers would want to see advertisements. So he used the Donations button instead. Which I think is hopeless because no one would want to donate money! I was being realistic. But he brushed me aside.

I like money, and I am sure Yusri loves it too. So if you like what you see in this blog and is satisfied with the content, please spare a thought at the effort put into answering your inquiries and the painstaking write up of technical entries. So help us by donating!

And btw, further entries about Ipod Touch and other IT stuffs, are now written in this blog:

http://www.ask-yusry-anything.blogspot.com

And if you’re a girl, consider an IT geek for a boyfriend. Most may look like robots, but at least you know your computer and other gadgets are safe in their hands. HAHAHAHAHAHA! You can sleep soundly knowing you’ll have a hero to recover lost documents and a busted computer. And maybe learn a thing or two from him about the gadget you just bought without actually reading the manual. Yusri has served me well for the last 2 years. 😛

That’s all. Hehehehe……

This blog is moving place!

February 24, 2008 at 10:53 pm (Aishah's, Announcements!, Band progress, Band reviews, Competitions, Covers, Dermapthera, DIY, Downgrade, Fishing CR, Fishing Review, From Stomp, From the News, Fun Stuff, Funny, Gadgets, Game Review, GBA, General, Gossip and Entertainment!, Hot Stuff, How to, iPhone, iPod Firmware, iPod Touch, iPod Touch Jailbreak, Jokes, Magic Tricks, Movie Reviews, MP3/MP4 Players, Music Reviews, Original compositions, Other products, Personal, Previous Gigs, PS2, PSP, PSX, Random Snaps, Reviews, Song reviews, Technical Stuffs, Tips and Tricks, Uncategorized, Upcoming shows, Upgrade, Version 1.1.1, Version 1.1.2, Version 1.1.3, YouTube videos)

Hi guys.

I am going to relocate most of my non-band related content from this blog onto another blog.

Although I enjoyed getting a lot of reads lately, it seems that this blog has become a little bit non-standard. I have loyal readers (I hope) and people who’d be willing to come to me to ask for help. I enjoy helping as much as possible.

And not forgetting being featured in WordPress’s BOTD and fastest growing blog, I’m just so honoured. But my decision is final.

Most links WILL be broken (if you have linked to me). I will not leave any trace of the post in this blog at all.

Since I’m getting more and more ready for my band Dermapthera, I plan to use this domain name (dermapthera.wordpress.com) as an official blog for the band only. I have been sticking to the domain name for as long as I can remember, and most people in the blogosphere will identify me as “dermapthera”.

I find that this could be misleading in the near future. Although I don’t see the band anywhere being successful in the near future, there’s still a possibility that we could be if we worked hard. Me and my vocalist have drawn out our visions for the future of the band and what we could do.

Hence I would like to take this opportunity to migrate to another blog. A new blog name, a new blog address. And I need a new identity. I don’t want to be remembered as “dermapthera”, but instead, as the “guitarist of dermapthera”.

When my new blog is ready, I will announce the address again. For now, I might not be updating new contents yet.

Sorry if I have caused any inconvenience. You guys have been great, and I have been enjoying a lot from blogging here.

Expected migration period will take one week (starting today). I will re-announce again once migration is successful.

Cheers.

P.S: The main reason why I placed all the tag/categories there is to reach out to potential RSS readers.

Make custom carrier images/logo (iPod Touch)

February 18, 2008 at 2:26 pm (How to, iPod Touch, Technical Stuffs, Tips and Tricks, Version 1.1.1, Version 1.1.2, Version 1.1.3)

AS OF 15 MARCH 2008 I WILL NOT BE REPLYING TO THIS POST. ALL NEWER POSTS/QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED IN MY OTHER TECHNICAL BLOG AT HTTP://ASK-YUSRY-ANYTHING.BLOGSPOT.COM

The follow up for this post is here.

———————————-

Hi guys!

I know this sounds a bit old, because I’ve only figured how to do this just TODAY! 😀

I was looking around to make my own carrier image for my boring iPod Touch, but I think I kept hitting the wrong keywords. And it always brings me to wrong places. So one day, I brace myself to ask someone (and hopefully he’s a nice guy!) to figure it out.

Then one day he replied! I was overjoyed. Hahaha… Didn’t really expect some complete stranger to help me out. I was so helpless.

Anyway, since I figured it out, I’m going to share with you how you could do it. (Full complete steps)

What are the things I’ll need?

You’ll need a PNG-8 image (don’t worry if you don’t understand), and it’s maximum height is 20px. You can use mine though if you want! 🙂

Here’s mine (I’ve converted into PNG8 format, for smallest filesize):

Default_CARRIER_IPOD.png
FSO_CARRIER_IPOD.png

Next, you’ll need something that you can access your iPod Touch’s internal system. For me, I’m using the trusty iphonebrowser. Use google, I’m sure you can find it easily.

So what do I do? (Finding the correct file)

You’ll need to search for the original file. If you don’t want to lose it, rename it so that you can replace it if you don’t want to use it anymore.

Step 1: Open iphonebrowser application

Step 2: Click on Goto Location -> Springboard Images and Settings

Step 3: Rename Default_CARRIER_IPOD.png into Default_CARRIER_IPOD.png.bk. This is necessary if you want to revert back to the original iPod carrier. Do the same for FSO_CARRIER_IPOD.png.

Step 4: Drag and drop your images (or you can use mine as a sample) into this same box (where you saw the files). Make sure the filenames are correct. You’ll need Default_CARRIER_IPOD.png and FSO_CARRIER_IPOD.png as the filenames.

Step 5: Restart springboard by using Summerboard. Or killboard. Or you can use Erica Utilities. Any method you use, all you need to do is restart the springboard to take effect. Alternatively, you can simply reboot your iPod Touch.

I need help! I’m a n00b13!1!111!!11

Well, you can always ask me. Or you can read the original write up. Either way, I hope to be of assistance to you.

Good luck!

Guide to errors (iPod Touch only)

February 9, 2008 at 8:20 pm (How to, iPod Touch, Technical Stuffs) ()

AS OF 15 MARCH 2008 I WILL NOT BE REPLYING TO THIS POST. ALL NEWER POSTS/QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED IN MY OTHER TECHNICAL BLOG AT HTTP://ASK-YUSRY-ANYTHING.BLOGSPOT.COM

The follow entry for this post is here.

————————————-

I know you guys itchy fingers go and update to 1.1.3 right?

To tell you the truth, I have not heard of anyone with a success story of having their 1.1.3 running WITHOUT any problems.

Not only that, the process to go through to get to jailbroken 1.1.3 is really a pain in the ass. If I have a linux/UNIX/Mac system right now, I’ll probably try to modify some codes (that’s already released), and make it a non-wifi version.

Anyway, purpose of this post is to outline most of the errors you might encounter, and it’s solution.

Let’s get started!

Unknown error (1)

This error is irritating. If the iPod Touch can talk, it’ll probably say: “Hahahaha! Serves you right for upgrading me to 1.1.3, then trying to downgrade. Now I’m gonna tell you that, FUCK NO I’m going to let you downgrade.”

So the solution? Make your iPod Touch in DFU Mode prior to downgrading. It’s not easy to execute, some people reported to having it trying up to 16 (that’s sixteen) times before it’s successful. Remember, patience pays for your ignorance. 🙂

Error 1403 | Error (1403)

In some cases, you might hit this error. Even though you selected the right file, with the right extension, this error shows up unexpectedly.

Solution? Download the firmware again. But before you do that, make sure you clear your internet explorer cache (or firefox cache) then download the firmware again. Make sure you select the right one for the right device.

To find out if you are having the uncorrupted file, do this:

Step 1: Copy that _Restore.ipsw file into another file (you can simple copy and paste, it’s probably comes out as a “copy of…” file)

Step 2: Change the extension of that into a *.zip file. Simply rename the *.ipsw into *.zip

Step 3: Try unzipping it (as how you usually unzip files). If it unzips successfully, it’s not a corrupted file.

For a list of firmwares, visit here.

Error 1604 | Error (1604)

This error is a special case. It have something to do with iTunes. If you’re using iTunes lower that 7.5, you will need to update it. Preferably use 7.5.

Here are some related links for you to digest on.

Removing iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
Error 1604 When restoring iPhone in iTunes
iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows

Error 1601, Error 1602 | Error (1601), Error (1602)

This one is about the same as the above.

Recommended solution: Update to iTunes 7.5 or greater.

Error 1601 or 1602 when restoring iPhone or iPod touch in iTunes

Unknown error (0xE8000022)

You will most likely hit this error as a sync-ing problem. “Itunes could not connect to the iPod “iPod” because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000022)”

The real solution is yet to be discovered, however, I have figured some temporary workaround for it. If you know of a better solution, please do let me know.

Kills “iTunesHelper.exe” background service

It seems that something in the background is preventing your device from getting connected. Try killing all background services that have the word “iPod”, “iTunes” or “Apple” in them. Then re-launching iTunes.

Re-install iTunes

I don’t know what you’re trying to do, but if you can’t connect to the device, probably it have something to do with iTunes.

Restore your iPod

Restoring definitely helps in any situation.

Unknown error

This is a SUPER tricky one. Because there’s no related issues to this error.

Solution: Whenever you hit an unknown error (without any numbers), it’s probably because of iTunes. I suggest restarting the comp or reinstalling iTunes (preferaby 7.5). Sometimes, a simple retry might help.

Help! I got any other errors other than those listed here!

Then use the comment feature. Although it’s to comment on the post, but it have become a “I got a question!” feature. Use it well. And I’ll try my best to reply when I’m available.

Good luck!

Free up unwanted space while using 1.1.3 jailbreak

February 5, 2008 at 11:09 pm (Downgrade, How to, iPhone, iPod Firmware, iPod Touch, iPod Touch Jailbreak, Technical Stuffs, Upgrade, Version 1.1.3)

Dlight sent me an email (hi Dlight!) and I guess it’s only appropriate to write this down since some people are desperately trying to get back their used space during that 1.1.3 upgrade phase.

However, I am only reading the script files and learned from it. I have no prior problems in freeing up the space (maybe the new firmware added some more shit? We don’t know) but I know we can only remove the 1.1.3 firmware file off your device.

So let’s get started!

Surely not another disclaimer right?

Heh… For this post, nope. But I’m going to tell you that I don’t know how much you can recover, or what files you can remove. I’ll try my best to guide you though.

Phew! Now what?

I’m sure some of you are running SFTP program to SSH into your device. I have been using another alternative (because I got no wifi) and I find them working 100% all the time.

So go ahead and download iphonebrowser (this guide will be using that) or iBrickr (maybe in future updates, but not today…)

One you got it, connect your iPod Touch or iPhone via the USB dock connector. You don’t have to launch iTunes, so just launch the installed iphonebrowser.

Now, if iphonebrowser doesn’t run on first try, wait for about 1-2 minutes before killing it. To kill it, simply hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, then look for iphonebrowser.exe, then end the process. This however only happens to me, maybe because of my firewall.

Do take note that iphonebrowser (or iBrickr) uses a certain port to connect to your device. It’s the same as iTunes, if this port is blocked, you can never connect to your device.

So now, you look for this folder:

/var/root/Media/1.1.3

If it’s there, DELETE IT.

Now you should be able to get back those space.

No! It didn’t remove all those space I need!

Erm… But that’s the only thing that’s there… I really don’t know if there’s any other files being used prior to upgrading though…

I can’t connect via iphonebrowser (or iBrickr) but I have wifi!

Ok, then download MobileFinder instead. Look for that folder, then delete the content. Or you can simply delete the folder.

DAMMIT! I want all those space! And NOW!

Erm.

If you asked me, I really don’t know where the rest of the space used up goes to. It was really undocumented so I can’t really locate the necessary file I was talking about.

But that alone should be able to remove approx 160 MB (the original firmware restore file). If you only removed 130 MB, then I’m not so sure why is that so.

Questions

Yeah as usual, hit me back and I’ll try to help.

I might not be able to answer all your burning questions, but I will try my best.

So well, good luck!

How to: Put iPhone apps into iPod Touch

February 1, 2008 at 7:25 pm (How to, iPod Touch, Technical Stuffs) ()

AS OF 15 MARCH 2008 I WILL NOT BE REPLYING TO THIS POST. ALL NEWER POSTS/QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED IN MY OTHER TECHNICAL BLOG AT HTTP://ASK-YUSRY-ANYTHING.BLOGSPOT.COM

There’s no real reason why you should do this, because it’s already out-dated. To install the iPhone apps (aka January app pack + wiggly icons), visit my new post.

——————————-

DISCLAIMER NOTICE

Please do not attempt to put iPhone apps into iPod Touch. You will only do so if you own an iPhone.

I am not responsible for any misuse of information stated here. This information is STRICTLY FOR PRIVATE AND EDUCATIONAL USE. The aim of this information is to share with the rest of you that it’s possible to do so. Other than that it is meant for software developers and/or other jailbreaking enthusiast.

Oh, and for those fuckers who tries to earn bucks selling these apps, FUCK YOU too. You should probably go to hell.

Anyway, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I am not affiliated with Apple or iPod Touch or iPhone or anything to do with the apple fruit.

Thank you.

Where to get those iPhone apps?

Read: iPod Touch & iPhone Applications!

Hence all the files BELONGS TO HIM. I myself don’t know what version was that application from.

I am going to ASSUME that it’s compatible for firmware 1.1.1 and 1.1.2. Please let me know if there’s some compatibility issues while using his files.

So what now? (Extracting the files)

First, download his zip file, and extract it to your desktop (anywhere is fine, just put into your desktop for this guide’s purpose).

You should have a folder named “iMobileApps”.

Inside this “iMobileApps” there’s 2 folders, named “Applications” and “System”.

Next? (Removing unnecessary files)

Use iphonebrowser or iBrickr to upload the files. Or you can use your favourite SSH or SFTP program (which requires you to have wifi) to transfer your files.

NOTE

iphonebrowser and iBrickr uses a certain connection to connect to your iPod Touch (or iPhone). Make sure your firewall allows this connection to go through or you might not be able to connect it at all.

You need to remove those folders that you are not going to use. So for the sake of this guide, PLEASE DELETE the below mentioned folders from the Application folder:

– MobileCal.app (that’s the calendar)
– MobilePhone.app (that’s the application for your iPhone to make calls)
– MobileSMS.app (that’s the application for your iPhone to make SMS)

You should have left with:

– Maps.app (That’s Google maps application)
– MobileMail.app (That’s the mail application)
– MobileNotes.app (That’s the notes application)
– Stocks.app (That’s the stocks application)
– Weather.app (That’s the weather application)

No point uploading all, it might cause unnecessary glitches/crashes. You wouldn’t want to deal with that at all.

Uploading the apps via iphonebrowser

In this guide, I’m only going to touch on using iphonebrowser because it’s the easiest to use. You can use iBrickr to achieve the same results, though it takes much more effort to accomplish the task. You can also use your favourite SSH or SFTP program (but hence will require a working wifi) to connect to your device.

To begin, just plug in your iPod Touch with the USB dock connector, and launch iphonebrowser. (If iphonebrowser doesn’t load, check your task manager, then kill iphonebrowser.exe, then launch it again)

NOTE

In order for iphonebrowser to work properly, please download and install iTunes+Quicktime (version 7.3.1 QT) for it to work properly.

Step 1 Step 2 term-vt snap

Step 1: Click on [root]

Step 2: Drag both the “Applications” and “System” folder as shown on the second screen shot. And wait for the process to finish.

Step 3: Now you can close iphonebrowser (if you want) and launch Term-vt100. If you don’t have this app, download one via Installer. You will need to change permissions for all your new apps you’ve just uploaded. Read: How to change file permissions

NOTE

If you don’t change permissions, your app will crash whenever you try to execute it. Make sure you change the permissions so that it can run without crashing.

And you’re done!

If all is well, reboot your device, then you can now enjoy your iPhone apps.

Question?

Ask me! Probably I might be able to help.

If it crashes, it’s more probably because:

1) This app comes from iPhone, hence it might not work properly in iPod Touch
2) You’re using an old firmware. Try using firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. If you want to run 1.1.3, you can try ipodtouchmaster’s tutorial and it will include everything with the $20 apps.

Other than that, any other general questions you can ask me. I try my very best to help.

Cheers!

And good luck! 🙂
